The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Kano State Chapter, has joined members of the Steering Committee Coalition for Human Rights and Child Protection in condemning the alleged violation of four children by a teacher within a school environment in Kano State.

The position was made known during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the secretariat office of International Federation of Women Lawyers in Kano, where participants described the incident as disturbing and a threat to the safety and protection children should enjoy in schools.

The meeting brought together various organizations and advocates committed to the protection of children, women, young people, and persons living with disabilities. Among the groups present were National Council of Child Rights Advocates of Nigeria, FIDA Kano, the Coalition for Human Rights and Child Protection, and several civil society organizations working to promote justice and social development.

Speaking during the meeting, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kano State Chapter, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, emphasized the critical role of journalists in ensuring justice and accountability in society.

She urged media practitioners to use their professional platforms responsibly in highlighting issues affecting vulnerable groups, exposing injustice, and promoting child protection and human rights advocacy.

Kabara further pledged that the Kano State chapter of NAWOJ would continue to sensitize the public through traditional and social media platforms on issues relating to child protection, gender-based violence, and the defense of human rights.

The coalition also deliberated on practical measures aimed at supporting the Kano State Government in preventing abuse and strengthening protection mechanisms for vulnerable members of society.

Participants called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, media organizations, civil society groups, and the general public in tackling child abuse and gender-based violence.

The organizations stressed that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and development, insisting that no child should live in fear of attending school.

They maintained that protecting children is a collective responsibility that requires sustained commitment from all stakeholders.

The statement was signed by Comrade Maryam Muhammad Yakasai, Secretary of NAWOJ Kano State Chapter, and electronically endorsed by Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, Chairperson of the association in the state.
