The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has empowered 150 indigent and vulnerable people who are at risk of having HIV in Kano.
The Director General (DG) of the agency, Dr Aliyu Gambo, stated this while presenting certificates to the beneficiaries in Kano on Friday.
Gambo said that the benefiaries were on trained on three income-generating trades in order to make them self reliant and contribute their quota to the economic productivity of Kano.
He said that the five-day training initiative taught the HIV vulnerable persons skills which included hairdressing, makeup, confectionery among others.
Represented by a staff of the agency, Hafsat Abdullahi Gumel, said the beneficiaries which consists of 75 men and 75 women were drawn from the 44 local government areas of the state,.
The Director-General explained that the gesture was to enable them become self-reliant and employers of labour.
The NACA boss revealed that each of the participants was given N75,000 as economic empowerment package.
She then restated the Director-Generals commitment in engaging women and adolescents in NACA activities, especially the Prevention Protection and Empowerment (PPE) programme.
Earlier, one of the partners of the empowerment programme, Malam Faharadeen Razi, urged the participants to make good use of the money and share the knowledge with others.
Razi then called for greater commitment on the part of communities toward eliminating HIV.
Amina Isa, who spoke on behalf of the participants, also thanked NACA and its partners for the gesture.
Isa then urged NACA to expand the programme to accommodate more people in their communities.
