Female journalists have been advised to widen their scope and imbibe the culture of indepth reporting.
A development journalist and founder of Kanam media hub, Ambassador Khadijah Ishaq Bawas made the call during a one day capacity building workshop, for young female radio journalists in Kano.
According to her the aim of the workshop is to brain storm, and engage upcoming female journalists on changing dynamics in media space especially radio broadcasting.
Khadija advised female journalists to look beyond normal news reporting, to development and investigative journalism as women have a vital role to play in the society.
She charged female journalists to be gender inclusive and take the lead in newsrooms.
“Female journalists should go beyond the reportage of sports, weather to a deeper level of journalism”
Presenting a paper on titled ‘taking leadership in newsrooms’ a freelance journalist Mr. Stephen Enoch described gender reporting as a news item that is equally balanced and diverse.
He noted that, eliminating gender stereotypes would go a long way in paving way for women to take leadership roles in newsroom.
During interactive session,participants shared their experiences and where they want to be in the next few years.
The event themed ‘Radio News reporting through gender lens: attracted over 40 female broadcast journalist from private and government owned media.
