The Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) has called for urgent action to combat the rising menace of phone snatching and thuggery in Kano State.
In a press conference held at the AHBN Conference Hall, the group’s Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, highlighted the alarming rate of street crimes and violent youth behavior in the state.
The group noted that the increasing incidence of phone snatching, gang culture, and peer pressure, as well as the use of substances and illicit drugs, are major contributors to the problem.
They also observed a decline in moral values, mentorship, and civic engagement among young people, which has heightened political tension in the state.
YOSPIS has made several recommendations to address the issue, including:
Declaring a State of Emergency on Youth Violence and Thuggery,Strengthening the relationship between the Kano State Government and security agencies
,Creating job opportunities and vocational centers for youth, Empowering community policing and local vigilantes,Prosecuting sponsors of thuggery and violence.
The group has pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that youth are protected, empowered, and redirected towards a life of purpose and peace.
They have called on the government, parents, community leaders, media, and youth themselves to take action to prevent phone snatching and thuggery.
“We affirm that this crisis is not just a criminal justice issue — it is a social emergency that demands a multi-stakeholder response. We need a wartime response—urgent, bold, and uncompromising,” said Zainab Nasir Ahmad, Executive Director of YOSPIS.
The press conference highlights the need for collective action to address the rising menace of phone snatching and thuggery in Kano State.
YOSPIS’s call for a State of Emergency on Youth Violence and Thuggery and other recommendations are a step in the right direction towards creating a safer and more empowered youth population.
