Ex-Kano Commissioners Allege Intimidation Over Official Vehicles After Resignation

Former members of the Kano State Executive Council have accused the state government of intimidation and rights violations following their resignation from office in the wake of Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a press statement issued on their behalf by AVM Umar Ibrahim (rtd), the former commissioners said the Office of the Secretary to the State Government formally requested the return of vehicles allocated to them while in office.

The affected officials, however, maintained that the vehicles were provided in line with the provisions of the Revised 2023 Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission Act covering certain categories of political and public office holders.

They noted that a former Commissioner for Transport who had earlier resigned was allowed to retain his vehicle, describing the current demand as selective and unfair.

According to the statement, the ex-commissioners subsequently approached the court to seek judicial interpretation of their entitlements under the law.

The former officials further alleged that security operatives, acting on government orders, trespassed into their residences and evacuated personal vehicles belonging to their spouses while they were away.

They described the action as a violation of their personal liberty and an act aimed at intimidating their families.

While condemning what they termed a vindictive approach by the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the ex-commissioners said they would continue to pursue legal redress and urged their supporters to remain calm pending the outcome of court proceedings.

They added that the official vehicles in dispute were allocated only four months ago and argued that they had used their personal vehicles for official duties for over two years prior to that.
