Alhaji Kabiru Yusuf-Nadabo, a retired Assistant Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called for the relocation of the Singer market to Dangwaro International Market in Kano.
Yusuf-Nadabo, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Jigawa made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.
”This call has become necessary in order to address the fire incidents that had plagueg the market over the past 15 years.
“I was at the scene of the incident on Feb. 14. from 4 p.m to 8am, encountered difficulty in accessing the scene during rescue.
”It took up 12 hours to put out the fire. The current location of the market is not conducive for heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, posing serious safety risks.
“Safety-wise, when you look at the environment, it is not ideal for articulated vehicles to move freely,”he said.
Yusu-Nadabo further explained that whenever there is a fire incident, fire fighting trucks find it very difficult to access the affected areas.
He added that on a daily basis, almost 100 trucks find their ways into the market to offload goods.
Yusuf-Nadabo said major adjoining roads, including the Bello and Ibrahim Taiwo Roads, are often completely blocked, compounding traffic and hindering emergency response.
“Based on experience in traffic management and public safety, relocating the market to Dangwaro International Market will significantly reduce congestion and put an end to recurring fire outbreaks.
The retired FRSC officer urged the state government to act with urgency in interest of public safety and sustainable urban development.
NAN reports that the fire outbreak destroyed properties worth over N5 billion, affecting over 1,000 businesses and leaving seven persons missing.
The market’s Chairman, Alhaji Junaid Zakari, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Sunday.
NAN reports that a massive fire broke out the same market on Feb. 2.
The fire ob Feb. 2, which started around 3:16 a.m., affected numerous shops before being brought under control by firefighters and emergency agencies, with no reported loss of lives.
NAN reports that in November 2025, a dawn fire razed 44 shops in the singer market while in March 2023, over 100 shops were destroyed.
Also, in November 2022, a warehouse and goods worth over N100 million went up in flames. (NAN)
