President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The nomination, which is in accordance with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006, was formally conveyed in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio. In the correspondence, President Tinubu requested the expeditious consideration and confirmation of Ambassador Yusuf to enable him assume leadership of the Commission.

Ambassador Yusuf’s nomination comes on the heels of the resignation of the immediate past Chairman of NAHCON, Professor Abdullahi Usman, who stepped down earlier this week after approximately 14 months in office.

While official reasons for his resignation have not been publicly detailed, sources indicate that the development paved the way for the appointment of a new helmsman to steer the affairs of the Commission.

NAHCON, established under the NAHCON Act of 2006, is the apex regulatory body responsible for the organization, supervision, and coordination of Hajj and Umrah activities for Nigerian pilgrims. The Commission plays a critical role in liaising with Saudi Arabian authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth participation of Nigerian Muslims in the annual pilgrimage.

Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf is a seasoned Nigerian career diplomat with decades of experience in foreign service.

He most recently served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure, he was credited with strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Türkiye, particularly in areas of trade, security cooperation, education, and cultural exchange.

Observers note that his diplomatic background and experience in international relations may prove instrumental in managing Nigeria’s engagements with Saudi authorities and other international partners involved in Hajj operations.

If confirmed by the Senate, Ambassador Yusuf will assume leadership at a time when preparations for upcoming Hajj operations require strategic coordination, financial prudence, and effective stakeholder engagement to address logistical challenges and ensure improved welfare for Nigerian pilgrims.

The Senate is expected to deliberate on the nomination in the coming days.
