Police Arrest Man for Impersonating Military Officer, Recover Toy Pistol in Akwa Ibom

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has recorded another operational breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across the state, following the arrest of a suspected impostor allegedly posing as a military officer to intimidate residents.

 

The Command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, disclosed in a statement that the suspect, identified as Jonathan Akpan, was arrested on March 6, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. by operatives of the command during an intelligence-driven operation.

 

 

According to the statement, Akpan, a resident of Obio Aduang Village in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, was apprehended after police received credible intelligence regarding his activities. Surveillance operations carried out by officers of the command subsequently led to his arrest.

 

Police said the suspect was found in possession of a toy pistol which he allegedly used to threaten and intimidate unsuspecting members of the public. He was also reportedly found with substances suspected to be Indian hemp at the time of his arrest.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly been impersonating a military officer in order to deceive members of the public and facilitate unlawful activities within the area.

 

The police spokesperson added that further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and to identify other possible members of the alleged criminal network linked to him.

 

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and ensuring the safety of residents. It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information that would assist security agencies in combating crime.

 

The command further warned individuals engaged in criminal acts to desist, stressing that the law enforcement agencies remain determined to bring offenders to justice while safeguarding lives and property across the state.
