Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the installation of 166 solar-powered boreholes across various communities in the state as part of an emergency intervention to address water scarcity.
The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this journalists in Kano.
He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving access to clean and reliable water supply for residents.
According to him, the project is expected to deliver about 4.15 million litres of water daily, benefiting an estimated 830,000 people across water-stressed communities in the state.
Dr. Hashim explained that each of the 166 solar-powered boreholes is designed to produce about 25,000 litres of water per day and serve approximately 5,000 residents.
He noted that the installation represents the first phase of the initiative, adding that additional boreholes would be deployed in other communities as part of the government’s expansion plan to address water challenges.
The Acting Commissioner said the project is part of immediate measures to reduce the impact of water shortages, while broader rehabilitation and expansion efforts are ongoing in the water sector across the state.
He further disclosed that rehabilitation work has commenced on the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants, which are expected to significantly boost water production and improve distribution across Kano metropolis and surrounding areas.
