Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) has called for the establishment of food and nutrition committees at state and local government levels to strengthen nutrition interventions and improve data collection.
National Steering Committee Lead, Capacity Building, CS-SUNN, Mrs Obiageli Miriam Azogu, made the call during an advocacy visit to Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State.
Azogu said the committees would help build capacity, assess nutrition data and improve support for nutrition activities at the grassroots. She described personal health as “health for the people and by the people” and urged stakeholders to increase support for community-based nutrition programmes.
Also speaking, CS-SUNN Communication Officer, Mrs Lilian Okafor, commended the local government for the warm reception accorded the team. She called for increased nutrition sensitisation through the engagement of religious and traditional leaders, as well as regular meetings to sustain advocacy efforts.
The CS-SUNN State Coordinator, Mr Salman Muhammad, also commended the local government for receiving the team, describing Kano Municipal as the oldest local government in the state with abundant human and other resources capable of advancing nutrition programmes.
Responding, the Kano Municipal Local Government Chairman, Mr Saleem Hasheem Gwangwazo, represented by the Director of Personnel Management, Mr Mahmoud Lamido, appreciated the visit and acknowledged the importance of strengthening food and nutrition programmes.
Lamido said food and nutrition were vital components of community development, assuring that the local government would constitute the proposed committee and ensure regular meetings to promote nutrition-related activities.
