The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has issued a renewed warning over the unlawful activities of masquerades across the state, following continued reports of violence, intimidation, and extortion by groups disguising under the guise of cultural celebration.
In a press statement released today, the Command expressed concern over persistent violations despite an earlier warning issued on September 18, 2025.
According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, some masquerade groups have deviated from cultural expression and are now engaging in criminal acts such as assault, illegal processions, extortion, and the use of masquerade costumes as cover for drug peddling and other offences.
“These acts are in clear violation of the Akwa Ibom State Masquerades (Control) Law, Cap. 94, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022,” the statement read.
The police disclosed that some groups have been staging unauthorized processions, attacking innocent citizens, and operating outside permitted routes without necessary approval from the Command.
The Command reiterated that no masquerade event or procession is allowed without prior approval from the Commissioner of Police. It reminded village heads, community leaders, and event organizers of their responsibility to ensure full compliance with the law.
Offences highlighted include:
Public outings without police permits
Straying from approved routes
Intimidation or assault of citizens
Forced entry into homes and threats
Criminal acts committed under disguise
The Command said it has strengthened surveillance and will arrest and prosecute offenders.
While acknowledging the importance of preserving cultural heritage, CP Azare emphasized that tradition must not be used as a cover for lawlessness. He urged residents to report any suspicious activity involving masquerades to the nearest police station.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.
