Properties valued at over N5 billion have been destroyed following a devastating fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano.
The Chairman of the market, Junaid Zakari disclosed this while briefing journalists on the extent of damage caused by the inferno, describing the incident as one of the worst tragedies in the history of the market.
According to him, the fire razed four residential buildings that housed more than 1,000 small-scale businesses, leaving traders counting heavy losses.
He noted that goods, equipment and other valuables were completely burnt, crippling the livelihoods of hundreds of families who depend on the market for survival.
The chairman further revealed that seven persons were declared missing as of the time of filing this report, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine their whereabouts and confirm whether they were alive or dead.
He said emergency responders and security agencies were working to unravel the cause of the fire.
Zakari described the incident as a tragedy that would never be forgotten in the history of Singer Market, stressing the urgent need for support to enable affected traders rebuild their businesses.
He, however, commended Abba Kabir Yusuf for visiting the scene while the fire was still raging, noting that the governor’s swift response demonstrated concern and solidarity with the victims.
Authorities are yet to officially determine the cause of the inferno, as affected traders continue to salvage what remains of their properties.
