Over Two Million Children Homeless in Kano, NGO Raises Alarm

The Global Improvement of Less Privilege Persons Initiative has raised serious concerns over the growing number of homeless children roaming the streets of Kano metropolis, revealing that more than two million children are currently without shelter or proper care in the state.

The Executive Director of the non-governmental organization, Mohammad Ali Mashi, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Kano.

He described the situation as alarming and called for urgent intervention from government authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

According to Mashi, many of the affected children can be found in areas such as Gadar Lado, Central Hotel Street, and several other busy streets across the metropolitan city.

He noted that the children, most of whom are of school age, survive by begging, doing menial jobs, or relying on public sympathy for food and shelter.

Mashi explained that a significant number of these children were originally sent from neighboring states to Kano to acquire religious education. However, he said many of them have abandoned the schools they were enrolled in and have instead taken to living on the streets, where they are exposed to hunger, abuse, exploitation, and criminal influences.

The NGO executive director warned that failure to address the situation promptly could escalate into a broader social crisis. He stressed that the growing number of homeless children could contribute to rising insecurity and other social vices in the state if proactive measures are not taken.
