As Ramadan unfolds against the backdrop of rising food prices and economic strain, the Public Enlightenment Movement (PEM) has announced plans to distribute 50kg bags of rice to more than 1,500 residents across Kano State in a bid to ease the burden on vulnerable households.
The initiative, spearheaded by the movement’s Coordinator, Nuhu Abdullahi, is scheduled to take place tomorrow at Guda Abdullahi Road, Farm Centre, in Kano.
Targeting the Most Vulnerable
According to organisers, the intervention is designed to cushion the impact of high food costs during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslim families observe daily fasting and traditionally gather for iftar meals at sunset.
“With the steady rise in the cost of living, many families are struggling to meet their daily food needs,” Abdullahi said ahead of the distribution. “This initiative is part of our commitment to stand with the people, particularly during spiritually significant periods like Ramadan.”
Over 1,500 beneficiaries drawn from communities across Kano are expected to receive the staple food item, a commodity that remains central to household consumption in northern Nigeria.
In a notable extension of the outreach, no fewer than 30 journalists will also benefit from the programme. More than 60 bags of 50kg rice have been set aside specifically for media practitioners.
The gesture marks a scale-up from a previous intervention in which 43 bags were distributed to journalists who have consistently covered PEM’s activities.
Organisers say the inclusion of journalists reflects the movement’s appreciation for the media’s role in amplifying grassroots initiatives and promoting civic engagement.
The Ramadan distribution comes at a time when many households are grappling with inflation and reduced purchasing power. Civil society groups across Nigeria have increasingly stepped in to provide food aid and other palliatives to bridge the gap for low-income families.
Observers note that such interventions not only address immediate nutritional needs but also strengthen community solidarity during religious observances.
By combining community outreach with media engagement, PEM’s initiative underscores the evolving role of civic organisations in both humanitarian response and public enlightenment.
Media organisations are invited to attend and cover the main distribution event at Guda Abdullahi Road, Farm Centre, Kano. The PEM Coordinator will be available for interviews and further briefings at the venue.
Organisers added that journalists unable to cover the event in full may still visit the Rahama meeting point to receive their allocated bags.
As Ramadan continues, thousands of households in Kano are expected to find some relief in the distribution — a gesture aimed at ensuring that the spirit of the season is matched with practical support for those in need.
