The Federal Fire Service Kano State Command has called on residents and business owners to strictly adhere to safety measures to prevent the frequent occurrence of fire outbreaks in markets and homes across the state.
The State Controller, Kasim Shola, made the appeal while briefing journalists in Kano, expressing concern over the rising cases of fire incidents in commercial areas.
He stressed the need for the general public to embrace all necessary safety precautions both at home and in their places of business, noting that many of the incidents could have been avoided with proper preventive measures.
Shola described the recurring fire outbreaks in Kano markets as disturbing and unacceptable, warning that continued incidents could have serious economic consequences for the state.
He noted that Kano remains a major commercial nerve centre in sub-Saharan Africa and emphasized that fire disasters must not be allowed to cripple business activities in the state.
According to him, adherence to safety measures is a collective responsibility, urging traders and residents to work closely with relevant authorities to safeguard lives and property.
Kasim Shola highlighted the need for the provision of water reservoirs in major markets and the creation of additional access roads to ensure quick response and effective emergency operations whenever the need arises.
He also advocated for the engagement of volunteer fire-fighting marshals to support official responders and appealed to residents to remain vigilant and intensify prayers toward ensuring a safe and crime-free society.
