The Association of People Living with Hypertension (APLWH), with support from the GAMMUN Centre, has met with key government stakeholders in Kano State to strategize on the timely release and effective utilization of funds allocated for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the 2026 fiscal year.
The meeting, held on February 24, 2026, focused on appraising and identifying a roadmap to ensure the prompt release and proper use of appropriated NCD and hypertension funds in the state. Representatives from the Kano State Ministry of Health, Kano State Ministry of Planning and Budget, and Kano State Ministry of Finance were in attendance, alongside officials from the Kano NCDs Coordination Unit.

During the deliberations, the Ministry of Planning and Budget disclosed that a total of ₦500 million has been earmarked for NCD interventions in the 2026 fiscal year. The allocation, according to officials, is expected to support prevention, treatment, and management programmes targeting hypertension and other non-communicable diseases across the state.

Stakeholders emphasized the urgent need for the prompt release of the appropriated funds to avoid delays in implementing planned activities, especially in view of the rising burden of hypertension and related complications. The Director of Budget highlighted the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration, noting that health outcomes are influenced by multiple sectors, including livestock and environmental policies.

He further revealed that the Kano State Ministry of Information has allocated ₦20 million in its 2026 budget for NCD awareness creation, underscoring a multi-sectoral approach to tackling the challenge. Participants collectively called for enhanced collaboration among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to strengthen health coverage, improve accountability, and ensure that interventions effectively reach vulnerable populations across Kano State.
