NSCDC Kano Command Warns Contractors Against Damaging Fibre-Optic Cables

Admin 1 month ago

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command, has warned construction companies and contractors operating in Kano to desist from tampering with or damaging fibre-optic cables and other critical national infrastructure during excavation and construction activities.

The State Commandant, Mohammed Hassan Agalama, expressed concern over the increasing cases of accidental and, in some instances, negligent destruction of underground fibre-optic cables across the state.

According to him, the damage to the cables has led to disruptions in telecommunication services, internet connectivity, banking operations and other essential services relied upon by residents and businesses in Kano.

The command advised all construction firms and developers to obtain necessary approvals and right-of-way clearance before commencing excavation works. It also urged them to liaise with relevant utility service providers to properly identify and map underground fibre routes.

The NSCDC further directed contractors to ensure the presence of technical representatives of telecom operators during major excavation activities and to adopt best practices as well as deploy modern equipment to prevent damage to critical infrastructure.

The command reiterated that fibre-optic cables and telecommunication installations are designated as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure and are protected by law. It warned that any individual or corporate body found culpable of willful destruction, negligence or sabotage would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

The Kano State Command assured residents of its commitment to safeguarding public assets in line with its statutory mandate, adding that surveillance and enforcement operations across construction sites would be intensified. It also called on stakeholders and members of the public to report any suspicious activity or unauthorized excavation near fibre routes to the nearest Civil Defence office.

The statement was signed by SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer, for the State Commandant.
