Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has appealed for the deployment of more troops and high-tech military equipment to protect residents following recent attacks by insurgents in parts of the state.
Zulum made the appeal after visiting survivors of the Ngoshe attack currently taking refuge in Pulka town in Gwoza Local Government Area. Ngoshe, a community in the council area, was attacked on Tuesday evening, leaving scores of people dead while several others were abducted.
During the visit, the governor sympathised with the affected families and survivors, assuring them that efforts were underway to rescue those abducted, restore security and provide immediate humanitarian assistance to victims.
Zulum specifically called on the Nigerian Army to intensify operations to clear insurgents from the Mandara Mountains, describing the area as a major security threat to communities around the border region.
Although the exact number of casualties from the Ngoshe attack has yet to be confirmed due to ongoing assessments, the governor acknowledged that the attack resulted in significant loss of lives and property.
He said the state government had commenced the distribution of relief materials to displaced residents and established community cooking centres in Pulka to provide immediate food support for survivors.
In a related development, Zulum also visited Konduga town to inspect houses destroyed during an attack by insurgents suspected to be members of Boko Haram on Thursday.
The governor reassured residents of the government’s commitment to rebuilding the affected homes and strengthening security presence in the area to prevent further attacks.
