OCCEN Sensitises Kano Stakeholders on Foreign Information Manipulation

The Organisation for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN), with support from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), has organised a one-day sensitisation seminar in Kano on building resilience against Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).

The seminar brought together participants, experts and Civil Society Organisation (CSO) representatives to examine the growing challenges of disinformation, misinformation and foreign interference in the information space.

The participants also discussed how the spread of false and misleading information could affect democratic processes, public trust and social cohesion.

Speaking during the seminar, speakers stressed the need for citizens to develop the ability to critically assess information before accepting or sharing it, particularly on social media platforms.

The panel session featured perspectives from social media practitioners, mainstream media professionals, civil society actors and researchers in the field of disinformation.

The panelists examined the changing information environment and its implications for society, democracy and civic participation.

They also shared strategies for identifying and responding to misinformation, disinformation and other forms of information manipulation.

The seminar provided an opportunity for participants to exchange views and explore ways of strengthening public resilience against harmful information while promoting responsible civic engagement.
