PDP Affirms Muhammad Abacha as Kano Governorship Candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections following the voluntary withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu.

The state PDP Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, disclosed this at an expanded State Executive Committee meeting held in Kano on Wednesday.

Bichi said the affirmation and replacement primary election were conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws.
“Last time, we conducted a primary election in which Muhammad Bello Dalhatu was declared the winner, but following consultations among stakeholders in Kano and Abuja, the candidate decided to withdraw.

“The law says that following a withdrawal, a replacement primary must be conducted. That is what brought us here today,” he said.

Bichi said Abacha was subsequently affirmed as the party’s governorship candidate after the replacement primary election conducted on Sept. 16.

The Chairman of the electoral panel, Dr Abba Abdullahi, declared Abacha winner of the exercise, saying he had satisfied the requirements for nomination under the party’s guidelines and relevant electoral regulations.

Bichi also announced that the party had resolved its internal factional differences through a reconciliation process, with the deputy governorship slot allocated to the Turaki group.

He said former factional PDP Chairman and former Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, had been selected as the party’s deputy governorship candidate.
“After wide consultations and reconciliation, we agreed to give the deputy governorship slot to the Turaki faction here in Kano.

“With this, there is no faction in Kano PDP. We have reconciled,” Bichi said.

He added that representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) witnessed the process.

The chairman further disclosed that some National Assembly and State Assembly candidates had also been replaced as part of the reconciliation arrangements.

He said the party was now united and would continue to strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bichi said the reconciliation and affirmation of Abacha as the governorship candidate would enable the party to consolidate its support across the state.
