El-Rufai Says He Has Spent 212 Days in Detention

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has raised concerns over his prolonged detention, saying he has spent 212 days in custody since his arrest on Feb. 18.

El-Rufai stated this in a post on his official social media pages, where he said: “Today Exactly 212 Days @elrufai in Detention,” and added that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

He also posted a flyer bearing his photograph and the message: “Detention must never become punishment before judgement. Due process is not privilege.”

El-Rufai has been in detention following an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) into alleged N432 billion money laundering linked to a petition by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

The ICPC has said the former governor was being kept in custody pursuant to a court remand order. He was, however, briefly released in March to attend the burial of his mother.

El-Rufai had also said in an interview that he tapped the telephone of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
