President Bola Tinubu has appointed his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action.
Ngelale will also serve as secretary of the newly established 25-member Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, announced the appointment in a statement issued on Sunday.
The statement, signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Segun Imohiosen, said the committee was established to coordinate and oversee policies and programmes on climate action and green economic development.
President Tinubu will chair the committee, while the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, will serve as vice-chairman.
According to the statement, the committee is expected to promote a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to climate action and ensure that relevant institutions implement the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda on climate action.
Its responsibilities include developing and implementing innovative non-oil and non-gas climate initiatives, coordinating federal institutions and collaborating with state governments, civil society organisations and international partners.
The committee will also monitor climate action and renewable energy projects, support the development of carbon markets and track the implementation of energy transition initiatives.
It is further expected to supervise the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen and prepare half-yearly reports on the government’s climate action achievements.
Other members include the Chief Executives of the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria, Nigeria Climate Change Council, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.
Representatives of relevant ministries, agencies and institutions, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, Federal Inland Revenue Service and Nigeria Customs Service, are also members.
The statement added that Ngelale would retain his position as the President’s official spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity while serving in the new role.
It said the appointment reflected President Tinubu’s commitment to achieving Nigeria’s green economy objectives, advancing a just energy transition and attracting investment into the sector.
