Students of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria celebrate World Physiotherapy Day

Students of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano on Thursday, 8th September, 2022, participated in the celebration of this year’s World Physiotherapy Day organized by the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP), Kano state chapter.

The event, which took place at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, was attended by the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr who led the students to the venue of the ceremony.

Other management staff of the university in attendance were the Director Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Dr. Nura A. Yaro, Vice President Finance, Mr. Dauda Abdulrasaq Kayode, Acting Dean School of Health Sciences, Dr. Kabir Mustapha Yakasai, among others.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, commended the effort of NSP for organizing the program, while at the same time, urging the students to make best use of the knowledge acquired during the lecture for their academic development.

In his welcome address, the NSP chairman Kano state, Dr. Bashir Kaka, said the event has been celebrated on the 8th of every September since 1953 when it was first launched.

According to him, the activity was organized to sensitise the public on this year’s theme: Osteoarthritis and the Role of Physiotherapy to prevent the spread of bone related diseases.

In his address, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa restated the commitment of his administration to improving the quality of healthcare delivery in the state.

He highlighted the landmark achievement recorded by his government in the health sector and lauded the NSP for supporting the government in its effort towards providing quality health care facilities.

Earlier in his presentation, the Associate Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Bello of Physiotherapy Department, Bayero University Kano, described osteoarthritis as a pandemic disease, adding that one out of every five adults in Nigeria is said to be infected by the disease.

Dr. Bello, who spoke at length on the importance of exercise in prevention and cure of the disease, also said people above the age of forty are more vulnerable to the illness than the younger ones.

Important dignitaries that graced the occasion include traditional rulers, students, health workers, top government functionaries, politicians as well as other stakeholders.
