Kano Clampdown on Illegal Private Schools – Defaulters to Face Legal Action

Admin 2 years ago

The Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board (KSPVIB) has vowed to take legal action against private schools operating illegally in the state.

Executive Secretary, Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, made this known in an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria.

According to Umar, out of approximately 6,000 to 7,000 private and voluntary schools in Kano, only about 2,800 are duly registered.

The board will collaborate with the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) and the Kano State Ministry of Justice to prosecute defaulting schools.

Defaulters will face consequences for failing to register, releasing false data, hoarding information, and evading tax payment.

The board aims to address issues like school fees increment without due process and imposing unnecessary expenses on parents.

While acknowledging the economic challenges, Umar emphasized that not a single private school has paid the required 10% of tuition fees to the government since he assumed office.

The board will approach the exercise with compassion but will take legal action against defiant schools.

On insecurity, Umar assured that the board has been monitoring schools in disguise, ensuring they provide adequate security.

The Kano State government has declared a state of emergency in the education sector and allocated over 26% of its 2024 proposed budget to education, exceeding the UNESCO declaration.

Parents have been assured that KSPVIB will ensure effective service delivery across the education sector.
