The Northern Youth Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa) has denounced the prosecution of minors alleged to have raised foreign flags during the End Bad Governance protest in Nigeria.
In a press release, the assembly’s national leadership expressed dismay over the viral video showing underage children, malnourished and depressed, arraigned in court. They described the event as an embarrassment to the Nigerian criminal justice system.
The assembly argued that raising foreign flags during protests is a global practice indicating dissatisfaction with the government.
They criticized the federal government’s continued detention of the minors, citing disregard for Nigerian laws and an attempt to destroy their futures.
The group highlighted the contrast with Sunday Igboho’s Yoruba Nation agitation in London, where no arrests were made despite more severe actions.
The assembly’s president, Dr. Ali Idris Mohammed, and secretary-general, Dr. Garba Abdulhafiz, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw charges and release the minors unconditionally, upholding rule of law and democratic principles.
