A Magistrate Court in Kano has convicted four men for violating the state’s forestry law by illegally felling trees at Sharada Municipal, underscoring the government’s renewed drive to protect the environment and combat climate change.
The offenders Jibril Adamu, Abubakar Suleiman, Musa Ibrahim, and Sani Abdullahi were arraigned before Normansland Magistrate Court II on charges brought by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
Prosecutor Barrister Bahijjah Aliyu presented evidence that proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
In his judgment, Magistrate Auwalu Yusuf held the defendants guilty under the Kano State Forestry Law and imposed the penalties prescribed by the statute.
Announcing the outcome on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said the verdict sends a clear signal that the state will not tolerate the destruction of its natural resources.
“The ruling sends a strong message that the Kano State Government will not tolerate environmental abuse,”.
“Protecting our trees is not just about preserving nature; it is about securing the future of our communities, our health, and our climate. We call on every citizen to act responsibly and support government initiatives to safeguard our environment.”
The ministry warned residents against indiscriminate tree cutting, urging them to support afforestation efforts and adopt climate-friendly practices to reduce deforestation and promote environmental sustainability.
Officials described the case as a milestone in Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s push to enforce environmental laws and protect forest resources across Kano State.
