The Senior Special Assistant on Publicity to the Governor of Kano State, Al’amin Albarra, has reaffirmed that the power to appoint a Deputy Governor rests solely with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, cautioning politicians and interest groups against undue interference in the process.

In a statement issued on April 18, 2026, Albarra emphasized that, in line with democratic principles and constitutional provisions, the authority to select a deputy governor is exclusively that of the sitting governor. He stressed that no individual, political group, legislative body, or party structure has the constitutional right to impose or dictate such a decision.

“The power is entirely his—100 percent. It is his right, his responsibility, and his prerogative as clearly enshrined in the constitution,” the statement noted, adding that even the State House of Assembly or political parties lack the legal standing to compel the governor on his choice of a running mate.

The aide also issued a strong warning to politicians issuing threats to defect from their party or undermine its stability if their preferred candidate is not selected. He described such actions as unnecessary and unproductive, urging those involved to reconsider their stance.

According to him, individuals engaging in political pressure tactics or attempting to create divisions within the party have already lost relevance in the matter. “The ink has dried,” he said, suggesting that decisions regarding the deputy governorship are beyond external influence.

Albarra further advised politicians to refrain from meddling in issues outside their constitutional authority, urging them instead to respect the governor’s exclusive mandate in making the appointment.
He concluded the statement with prayers for divine guidance and continued success for Governor Yusuf, popularly known as “Abba Gida-Gida,” in steering the affairs of Kano State.
