The Kano State Government, in collaboration with development partners, has launched four strategic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)  documents aimed at strengthening sector governance, financing and sustainable service delivery across the state.

The documents unveiled at a stakeholders’ meeting include the Kano State WASH Financing Strategy, Kano State Sustainable Basic Sanitation Access Roadmap, Kano State WASH Sustainability Plan, and the Makoda Local Government WASH Strategic and investment plan.

All the documents are designed for implementation over a five-year period from 2026 to 2031.

Speaking at the launch, at Tahir Guest Place Kano,  the State Programme Coordinator of the WASH Systems for Health (WS4H) Programme, Aminu Musa Idris, described the development as a significant step towards expanding access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in Kano. He said the documents provide a roadmap for sustainable WASH service delivery and called on stakeholders to support their effective implementation.

Idris noted that the documents were developed with the support of Self Help Africa under the WS4H Programme, funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and implemented through the Kano State Multi-Sectoral Forum (KANMAF).

Also speaking, the Team Lead and Programme Manager of the WASH Systems for Health Programme, Mr. Timothy Ibeawuchi, said the goal of Self Help Africa is to ensure the successful implementation of the four strategic plans and improve access to WASH services at the local government level.

He expressed hope that the Kano model would serve as a blueprint for other local government areas across Nigeria, adding that the organisation envisions every LGA in the country developing a sustainable WASH systems framework.

Representing the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the documents.

He assured stakeholders that the ministry, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), and other relevant institutions would provide the necessary support to ensure the success of the initiative.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Dr. Abdulkadir, commended Self Help Africa, its partners and the Kano State Government for developing the strategic documents, expressing confidence that their implementation would bring lasting benefits to communities across the state.

The event brought together government officials, development partners, civil society organisations and key stakeholders in the WASH sector to reaffirm their commitment to improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in Kano State.
