The Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has unveiled its one-year stewardship report, highlighting achievements in members’ welfare, professional development and institutional reforms.

The Chairman of the chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, presented the scorecard during the chapel’s 12-month stewardship presentation and first anniversary celebration held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano on Monday.

Adewale said the administration had prioritised members’ welfare by providing direct financial support to 10 members, facilitating loans worth N8.5 million, securing two Hajj slots, providing N2 million medical assistance for a member and distributing Ramadan food items valued at N2.5 million.

He added that the executive also secured an additional monthly welfare package of N30,000 for members, bringing the total value of direct financial interventions recorded during the year to about N9.5 million.

According to him, the administration also introduced initiatives aimed at strengthening professional capacity and promoting members’ well-being, including the Tea Break Platform for networking, a fully sponsored four-day capacity-building retreat in Kaduna and the institution of the Distinguished Awards of Excellence to honour veteran journalists, former leaders and distinguished members of the chapel.

The chairman said the executive established a Cooperative Society with an initial capital base of N10 million to improve members’ access to financial support and installed an Olympic-standard table tennis facility to encourage recreation and healthy living among journalists.

He further disclosed that the chapel produced a Government Compendium documenting the achievements and development initiatives of the Kano State Government as part of efforts to improve institutional visibility.

Adewale said other achievements included the provision of unlimited 5G internet service, installation of DSTV with sustained monthly subscriptions, engagement of a cleaner for the chapel’s offices, procurement of an electric kettle, reactivation of the chapel’s bank account to enhance accountability, creation of an official Facebook page and continuous provision of refreshments for members.

He attributed the achievements to the support, unity and commitment of members, assuring that the executive would continue to uphold transparency, accountability and service while introducing more programmes to enhance members’ welfare, strengthen professional ethics and improve journalists’ capacity.

The event attracted senior journalists, media executives, academics as well as representatives of government and professional bodies, who commended the chapel for promoting accountability through the public presentation of its stewardship report.
