Gombe 2027: Elections Are Won at the Polls, Not on Social Media

There is a fundamental truth about politics that the excitement of the social media age sometimes makes us forget: elections are not won by the loudest voices online. They are won by the people who actually go to polling units to cast their votes.

In 2027, the next Governor of Gombe State will not be elected on Facebook, X, Instagram or TikTok. That decision will be made at polling units across the local government areas of Gombe State by the people who live with the consequences of that choice.

That distinction is important.

Social media has transformed political communication. A politician can trend nationally within hours and become the subject of conversations far beyond his immediate constituency. But political visibility is not necessarily electoral viability.

Likes are not ballots. Following anyone on social media is not voting. Retweets are not polling units. And sympathy generated hundreds or thousands of kilometres away cannot replace the confidence of the electorate at home.

This is perhaps one of the most important realities to understand about the politics of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, the Sardaunan Gombe, as the conversation around Gombe 2027 gathers momentum.

His political engagement appears deliberately focused on Gombe State and its people. And there is a simple reason for that: these are the people whose mandate he seeks.

Politics, after all, is local.

Anyone seeking to govern a people must understand their communities, aspirations, frustrations and expectations. Beyond that, the people themselves must know the person asking for their mandate.

For Jamil Gwamna, that relationship did not begin with the approach of the 2027 election. Sardaunan Gombe began his campaign more than two decades ago, long before the present political contest.

Every relationship built along the way has mattered. Every opportunity created has mattered. Every person whose life was touched has mattered. His years in the corporate world, his experience in public service, his political engagements, philanthropy and relationships with communities have all contributed to building a political identity rooted in Gombe State.

That is why the present stage of Sardauna’s political engagement should perhaps be understood for what it is. He is not simply travelling around Gombe State introducing himself to the people. For many of them, the introduction happened years ago.

The more important conversation today is about his vision for the future.

It is increasingly less about Who is Jamil Gwamna? and more about What does Jamil Gwamna intend to do for Gombe State?

That is where the 2027 conversation ought to be.

What is the plan for jobs?

What is the plan for agriculture?

What is the plan for education and healthcare?

How will Gombe attract investment and expand its economy?

How will technology create opportunities for young people?

How will government become more efficient?

And how can the progress already recorded in the state be consolidated while opening new frontiers of development?

These are the conversations that should determine who leads Gombe State after 2027.

This is also why concentrating political energy within Gombe should never be confused with national or international visibility. A person seeking to become Governor of Gombe State must first secure the confidence of Gombe people, and that is exactly what Sardauna is doing.

Sympathy in Abuja, Kano or Kaduna cannot cast a ballot in Gombe.

Applause in Abuja cannot replace grassroots acceptance in Akko.

A trending conversation outside the state cannot substitute for relationships in Balanga, Billiri, Dukku, Funakaye, Kaltungo, Kwami, Nafada, Shongom, Yamaltu/Deba or Gombe.

When election day comes, the governorship will be decided here.

None of this suggests that social media is irrelevant. Social media provides an important platform for communicating policies, engaging young people, responding to misinformation and broadening political participation, but it is not a replacement for grassroots politics.

For Sardaunan Gombe, therefore, the task ahead appears clear: remain with the people, listen to them, engage them, build a good relationship with them and also present a credible agenda for the future. This is exactly what Sardauna has been and is still doing over time across communities and Local Government Areas in Gombe Stata.
