Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following weeks of political consultations.
Shekarau announced his decision alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whom he also left.
Addressing party loyalists,at his resident in Kano,Shekarau said the decision was reached after extensive consultations and careful evaluation of available political options.
It could be recalled that some few days ago the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, visited Shekarau and Gwarzo at their residence as part of efforts to woo influential opposition figures ahead of future elections.
During the visit, Yilwatda appealed to both leaders to return to the APC, describing himself as their “son” in need of their guidance and political backing, while also urging their associates to support the move in the interest of northern political unity.
In his earlier response, Shekarau had commended the APC chairman for the visit, describing it as a show of respect and commitment, but maintained that consultations were ongoing and no immediate decision would be taken.
He had emphasized that any political decision would be guided by the best interests of Kano State.
The defection also follows recent political engagements involving Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who visited Shekarau at his residence amid growing political realignments in the state.
