Kano Police Arrest Woman Over Alleged Arson, Four Hospitalised

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Maryam Usman, over alleged arson and attempted culpable homicide following a domestic incident in Mangwarori Quarters, Mariri area of Kano, which left four persons with serious burn injuries.

The incident occurred in the early hours of May 12, 2026, at about 12:40 a.m., when the suspect allegedly set fire to a room occupied by her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu, aged 40.

The fire incident resulted in varying degrees of burns sustained by four victims, including the co-wife, two children—Isma’il Saminu, aged three, and Khadija Saminu, aged five—and their father, Saminu Miko.

Police said the victims were promptly evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed, but authorities confirmed they are under medical care.

According to the Command, patrol teams swiftly responded to the distress call and arrested the suspect at the scene. Relevant exhibits were recovered, while preliminary investigations have commenced.

The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bompai for further discreet investigation and possible prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, condemned the act, describing it as inhuman and criminal. He directed that the matter be handled professionally and expedited to ensure justice for the victims, while also wishing them a speedy recovery.

The Command advised members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through peaceful means, including dialogue and mediation by family or community leaders, warning that acts of violence and arson carry severe legal consequences.

It also urged residents to report early signs of conflict and any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
