The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Monday performed a mini durbar in honour of the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, and his delegation during a visit to the Kano Emirate.

The colourful event, held at the Emir’s Palace in Kano, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the ancient emirate and highlighted Kano’s historical role as a centre of commerce and civilisation in West Africa.

Speaking during the occasion, Sanusi called on the European Union to deepen its support for Kano State and Nigeria in critical sectors such as security, healthcare and education, with particular emphasis on the education of the girl-child.

The emir noted that Kano had historically played a significant role in regional trade and cultural preservation, tracing its prominence to the era of trans-Saharan commerce.

He stressed the need for stronger international partnerships to address the security challenges confronting the country, particularly in the North-West region.

According to him, increased support for security initiatives would help restore lasting peace and stability in communities affected by insecurity.

Sanusi also underscored the importance of investing in healthcare and education, describing them as vital pillars for sustainable development and social progress.

He recalled that the Kano Durbar was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024, noting that the cultural display remained one of the emirate’s enduring traditions for receiving distinguished visitors.

Earlier, Mignot said the EU delegation was in Kano as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with Northern Nigeria in key areas of development.

The ambassador said the EU remained committed to supporting programmes aimed at improving education, healthcare delivery and security across the region.

He commended Kano’s rich cultural heritage and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him and members of his delegation.

The mini durbar featured horse riders adorned in colourful traditional regalia and other cultural displays.

It attracted palace officials, community leaders and other dignitaries who gathered to welcome the visiting delegation.

The event formed part of activities marking the ambassador’s visit to Kano and provided an opportunity for discussions on areas of mutual interest between the European Union and stakeholders in the state.
