Kano Govt Empowers 5,800 Women With N290m Grants

The Kano State Government has empowered 5,800 women across the 44 Local Government Areas with N290 million grants under its Monthly Women’s Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme.

Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf disclosed this in Kano while inaugurating the distribution of N50,000 grants to each of the beneficiaries.

The governor said the programme, tagged: “Empowering Women, Transforming Lives, Building Stronger Communities and Promoting Inclusive Growth and Development,” was introduced as part of his administration’s Renewed Hope and Kano First initiatives.

According to him, the programme was designed to alleviate poverty, improve the economic wellbeing of women and strengthen their capacity to support their families.

Kabir-Yusuf said the initiative, which commenced after the inception of his administration, would continue until December.

He urged the beneficiaries to invest the grants wisely in viable businesses capable of generating income and improving their livelihoods.

The governor also appealed to the women to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, saying their votes contributed to the emergence of the present administration.

“With your votes, we came into power, and now you are here receiving empowerment,” he said.

The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Murtala Sule-Garo, said the administration had fulfilled about 97 per cent of its campaign promises, particularly in health, education and road infrastructure.

Sule-Garo commended the governor for sustaining the women’s empowerment programme, saying it would contribute to improving the living conditions of women across the state.

He urged the beneficiaries to participate actively in the 2027 elections and vote for APC candidates at all levels.

Also, the Emir of Gaya, Dr Aliyu Ibrahim-Abdulkadir, commended the initiative, saying the traditional institution was pleased with programmes that directly improved the lives of citizens.

“This empowerment has made us happier than even the beneficiaries because it is directly touching the lives of our people,” he said.

The emir urged the beneficiaries to use the grants judiciously to improve their families’ economic wellbeing.

He also commended the administration for its interventions in the health and education sectors, including payment of compensation to owners of land acquired for the development of the newly approved Federal Polytechnic, Gaya.

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud-Bunkure, also commended the initiative and urged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the grants.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Rabi’a Muhammad, a widow and mother of seven, expressed appreciation to the governor, saying the intervention would assist her in catering for her children and paying their school expenses.
