NCoS, PRAWA Empower Eight Non-Custodial Clients in Kano

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in collaboration with the Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), has empowered eight non-custodial clients in Kano with starter packs and survival kits.

The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC), is aimed at promoting the beneficiaries’ reintegration, economic self-reliance and productive contribution to society after acquiring vocational and entrepreneurial skills. The items distributed included three three-drawer butterfly sewing machines, a carpentry toolbox, broilers and two bags of broiler feeds, a handbead fixing machine and two trailer installation toolboxes.

Representing the Controller-General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, the Deputy Controller-General in charge of the Non-Custodial Directorate, Ibrahim N. Idris, urged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the items. Idris said the Kano Non-Custodial Unit would continue to supervise and support them, adding that the initiative was in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, which emphasises rehabilitation, reformation, reintegration and empowerment.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, CC Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, fsi, welcomed the President of PRAWA, Associate Professor Uju Agomoh, and her team to the Command. He expressed appreciation to PRAWA for selecting Kano as a beneficiary and commended the Non-Custodial Unit for its efforts in implementing the programme.

Agomoh appreciated the NCoS for its partnership in strengthening non-custodial measures nationwide and urged the beneficiaries to utilise the starter packs effectively, maintain quality standards and remain committed to hard work and responsibility. She said the initiative was part of broader efforts by the NCoS and its development partners to strengthen rehabilitation, economic empowerment and reintegration of persons under non-custodial supervision.
