The Kogi State Police Command says it has commenced an investigation into the deaths of two police officers attached to the Ajaokuta Police Division.

The officers, identified as Amos Yusuf and Grace Onimisi, reportedly died following a shooting incident during night duty on Friday, Oct. 23.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday.

Afusat said preliminary reports indicated that Yusuf allegedly shot Onimisi before subsequently shooting himself with an AK-47 rifle.

She explained that both officers were rushed to separate medical facilities, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.

According to her, their remains have been deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.

The police spokesperson added that one AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered from the scene.

She said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.

Afusat urged members of the public to refrain from speculation over the incident, stressing that the circumstances and motive behind the deaths remained under investigation.

She said the command would not speculate on issues that had yet to be established by investigators.
