NLC Chapters Push Governors for N70,000 Transport Allowance

State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have begun pressuring their respective governors to implement the Federal Government’s newly approved N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public sector workers.

The allowance, approved for six months beginning November 2026, is aimed at cushioning the impact of rising transportation costs and other living expenses on workers.

The Federal Government introduced the intervention following negotiations with organised labour, prompting unions across several states to seek similar arrangements for their members.

In Lagos State, NLC Chairperson, Agnes Sesi, said the union would demand a monthly transport allowance of N100,000, citing the high cost of transportation, accommodation and other essential services in the state.

Sesi urged the state government to ensure prompt implementation and avoid allowing workers’ unpaid entitlements to accumulate.

In Kaduna State, NLC Chairman, Ayuba Magaji, said the union would formally approach Governor Uba Sani to request the adoption of the Federal Government’s N70,000 benchmark.

Similarly, Kebbi State NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, said he had begun discussions with members of the state House of Assembly to secure support for an allowance ranging from N40,000 to N70,000.

Labour unions in Benue, Bayelsa, Ondo, Edo, Rivers, Gombe and Niger states are also considering the intervention, with some already engaging their respective governments while others await further directives from the NLC national leadership.

However, the proposal has received reservations in some quarters.

Rivers State Trade Union Congress Chairman, Samuel Ogan, said a six-month allowance would not provide a lasting solution to workers’ economic challenges.

He urged the government to prioritise a permanent salary increase rather than relying on temporary relief measures.

The NLC’s demands vary across states, reflecting differences in living costs and the financial circumstances of workers, as unions intensify efforts to secure additional support amid prevailing economic challenges.

The development was reported by The Punch on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
