A Kano-based Dental Specialist, Dr Okolo Chizoba, has urged parents to take steps towards protecting their children from dental diseases.
Chizoba made the call during a free dental screening exercise at the Kano Capital School on Monday.
He said it was dangerous for people not to take their dental health seriously. Saying, ”there is need for change”
Chizoba, a consultant child dental specialist at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, said that poor dental health could lead to other ailments.
He said that many school children in the state suffered one form of oral disease or another
”Many school children have bad teeth. In every 10 school children, six of them have bad teeth.
”So, there is need to take the crusade for sound dental health to the rural communities,” he said.
The expert identified poverty and lack of awareness as the major causes of poor dental health in some families.
He advised parents to take their children for dental health checks every six months.
The consultant further urged members of the public to brush their mouth after taking sugary foods or drinks to avoid decay.
”Some bacteria that live in the mouth eat those sugary substances, and they produce acid that causes tooth decay, “
