MINOCYCLINE DRUGS IMPROVE COGNITION IN SICKLE CELL

A Professor of neurology and neuroscience with the university of Cincinnati, United States, professor Hyacinth I. Hyacinth said minocycline drugs which was initially used as an anti-biotic, has been discovered to be a cognitive drugs that can be use to treat sickle cell patients. He disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the delegation of the university to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in order to collaborate with the hospital for further research on minocycline drugs, as Nigeria has the highest number of sickle cell patients in the world.

AKTH TO PERFORM SECOND COCHLEAR IMPLANT SURGERY 

Speaking, Dr Ibrahim Musa Idris a consultant hematologist with AKTH and a site principal investigator with Stroke Prevention in Young Adult (SPIYA) and Priapism in Nigeria (PIN) study, shed more light on the importance of the drugs to sickle cell patients as Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is one of the top hospitals working to help sickle cell patients in northern Nigeria.

He further spoke on a new development where samples of sickle cell patients will be collected and stored for further research which is called Biorepository restoratory sample collection.

Commenting, the representative of the chief medical director AKTH Professor Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, the Deputy chairman medical advisory committee clinical, Dr Idris Suleman, thanked the representative and assured them the hospital support and assistance throughout the research.
