A fresh wave of debate has emerged within Nigeria’s football community following the vote of confidence passed on the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), with sports stakeholder, Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, defending the decision and questioning critics of the move.
Gombe, who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Athletics and Other Sports Commission, an NGO advocating accountability and transparency in sports, made his position known in a press statement issued in Abuja on Thursday. He described the endorsement of the NFF leadership led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau as both expected and within the legitimate rights of Congress members.
The NFF Congress had recently concluded its meeting in Yenagoa, where stakeholders overwhelmingly passed a vote of confidence on Gusau and his executive committee. According to Gombe, such endorsements are not unprecedented in Nigerian football administration, recalling that a similar gesture was extended to the former NFF leadership under Amaju Melvin Pinnick despite widespread criticisms during his tenure.
“It is their right and normal to pass a vote of confidence. It has a precedent; it is not a new thing,” Gombe stated, arguing that the level of alleged infractions attributed to the current NFF leadership pales in comparison to what he described as more severe mismanagement under Pinnick. He insisted that critics who are now vocal were largely silent during the previous administration.
Gombe further questioned the prospects of meaningful reform in Nigerian football under the supervision of the National Sports Commission (NSC), pointing to the current leadership of Shehu Dikko, who previously served as NFF Vice President during Pinnick’s era. He expressed doubt that systemic changes could occur without a comprehensive overhaul of the sports governance structure.
The sports administrator also took aim at former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel and other ex-internationals who have recently called for reforms, accusing them of selective criticism. He referenced past issues involving legendary goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, suggesting that some of those now advocating change had failed to speak out at critical moments in the past.
In his remarks, Gombe also criticized what he described as superficial engagements by stakeholders, including visits to political leaders without clear reform agendas. He cited a 2023 meeting involving notable football figures such as Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, and Taribo West with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the absence of concrete proposals undermined their credibility in demanding reforms today.
Gombe maintained that football development is a long-term process that cannot be transformed within a short period, emphasizing that World Cup qualification and broader success require structured planning and sustained implementation. He warned against what he termed “recycling hypocrisy,” urging stakeholders to adopt consistent standards in evaluating football administrators.
While acknowledging the imperfections within the current system, Gombe called for a thorough investigation into the operations of the NFF dating back to previous administrations, including that of Aminu Maigari, as a prerequisite for genuine reform. He concluded by urging the NSC to strengthen its governance framework and ensure accountability in the management of public funds across all sports federations.
