Thousands of enthusiastic residents flooded major streets across Kano on Saturday to receive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in a dramatic show of support, despite rising political tension triggered by the recent defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
From Aminu Kano International Airport through Kofar wambai, Kwari to the Government House axis, supporters—many waving party flags and chanting solidarity songs—lined the roads for hours, creating a carnival-like atmosphere as the governor’s convoy moved through the ancient city.
Eyewitnesses described the reception as one of the largest public mobilisations in recent months, underscoring the governor’s enduring grassroots appeal even as Kano’s political landscape undergoes a major realignment.
The reception comes at a critical time in Kano politics following Senator Kwankwaso’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ADC, a move widely seen as a significant shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, a towering political figure and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, had long been a central force in Kano’s political structure. His exit from the NNPP and call for supporters to align with the ADC has deepened political divisions in the state.
The development followed earlier changes, including Governor Yusuf’s own departure from the NNPP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier in 2026, further intensifying the reshaping of alliances.
Saturday’s massive turnout, therefore, is being interpreted by analysts as a calculated demonstration of political strength by the governor and his supporters.
Many residents who spoke to journalists said their presence was driven by loyalty to the governor and confidence in his leadership.
“We are here to show that Kano people stand with their governor. Politics will always change, but leadership is about service,” said a youth leader in Gwale.
Traders, students, women groups, and party loyalists were seen cheering and waving as the convoy passed, while security personnel maintained order to ensure a peaceful procession.
Political observers say the development highlights a growing contest for influence between established political blocs in Kano.
“The defection of Kwankwaso to ADC has undoubtedly altered the political equation,” said a Kano-based analyst. “But today’s crowd shows that Governor Yusuf still commands significant street-level support.”
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, with a large voter base and a history of shaping national electoral outcomes.
