Kano Signs ₦21.29bn Contracts to Rehabilitate Tamburawa, Challawa Water Facilities

The Kano State Government has signed contracts worth ₦21.29 billion for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment facilities as part of efforts to improve access to potable water across the state.

 

The contracts were executed by the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources with two Chinese firms, CGC Nigeria Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited, covering key components of the state’s water infrastructure.

 

The rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of its Raw Water Pump Station was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited at the cost of ₦9.9 billion, while CCECC Nigeria Limited secured the ₦11.39 billion contract for the rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station, Water Treatment Plant, and restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

 

The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, signed the agreements with representatives of the companies at a ceremony held on May 7, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters in Kano.
Dr. Hashim expressed confidence in the capacity of the contractors to deliver the projects according to specifications and within the stipulated eight-month timeframe, stressing the need for timely completion.

 

He described the projects as a major step towards reviving critical water infrastructure, enhancing water production and distribution systems, and improving access to safe drinking water for residents.

 

The commissioner added that the projects would significantly boost water supply services in metropolitan Kano and surrounding communities.
Representatives of the contracting firms assured the government of their readiness to deliver the projects within schedule while maintaining quality standards.

 

The ministry also pledged strict monitoring and supervision to ensure transparency, accountability, and successful execution of the projects.
