Operatives of the Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Military Joint Task Force (JTF), have recovered 67 stolen cows and other livestock from suspected rustlers in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.
The public relations officer of the Command CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa disclosed this to newsmen in Kano.
He said the operation, which followed credible intelligence, was carried out on May 6, 2026, at about 6:15 p.m., after reports that cattle rustlers had attacked several villages around Gwarzo and neighbouring communities.
A joint team comprising police operatives from the Gwarzo Division and JTF personnel deployed at the Kano-Katsina border was mobilised to the affected areas.
On sighting the security team, the suspects reportedly engaged operatives in a gun duel but were eventually overpowered due to the superior firepower of the joint team. The rustlers fled the scene, abandoning the stolen livestock.
Items recovered during the operation included 67 cows, one donkey, and one sheep.
The livestock were taken into custody at the Gwarzo Police Division and were later released to their rightful owners on May 7, 2026, after proper identification and verification. The handover was conducted through district heads under the supervision of the local government chairman.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, with intensified manhunt and surveillance operations in the affected communities to prevent a recurrence.
