Residents of Federal Housing Estate Sharada in Kano State have commended the Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Professor Innocent Bariate Barikor, for his swift response to complaints of environmental pollution affecting the area.

The residents, in a statement issued on May 15, 2026, expressed appreciation for what they described as a prompt and sincere intervention by the agency’s leadership following years of unresolved grievances.

They said the intervention had brought relief and renewed hope after prolonged exposure to environmental hazards allegedly caused by the activities of Fortune Rice Mill, Salable Rice Mill, and Salasar Enterprises Co. Ltd.

According to the community, residents have endured excessive dust, offensive odour, and air pollution from the rice mills over the years, leading to health complications and forcing some families to relocate from their homes.

The residents noted that previous complaints to relevant authorities over the past five years yielded little or no action, leaving the situation unaddressed.

They, however, praised Barikor for demonstrating leadership and commitment in handling the matter with urgency, describing his actions as a step toward safeguarding public health and the environment.

The community also called for transparency in the ongoing investigation, urging the agency to ensure that only competent and incorruptible officials are involved in the process.
While pledging their cooperation with NESREA, the residents expressed optimism that the agency’s intervention would lead to lasting solutions to the environmental challenges in the area.
