Thousands of eligible voters turned out across polling units in Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas of Kano State on Saturday to participate in the House of Representatives by-election for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency.
The by-election, which attracted significant voter participation from the early hours of the day, was conducted under a peaceful atmosphere as residents queued orderly to exercise their civic responsibility and elect a representative for the constituency in the National Assembly.
Observers and election officials reported that voting commenced as scheduled in most polling units, with voters demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to the democratic process. Security personnel were also deployed to strategic locations to ensure the safety of voters, election officials and electoral materials throughout the exercise.
Speaking after monitoring the election in various polling centres, the Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Danjuma Mahmoud, commended the electorate for their maturity, discipline and peaceful conduct during the exercise.
He described the turnout as impressive and indicative of the people’s confidence in the electoral process, noting that residents of the constituency had demonstrated a strong commitment to democratic governance through their active participation in the by-election.
The commissioner expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of voters and the level of compliance with electoral guidelines, adding that the peaceful atmosphere recorded throughout the exercise reflected the growing political awareness among citizens in the constituency.
Mahmoud also praised security agencies and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring a smooth electoral process. According to him, the collaboration among stakeholders contributed significantly to the success of the exercise.
Some voters who spoke to journalists expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, describing the process as transparent, peaceful and well-organised. They urged electoral authorities to sustain the improvements recorded in the by-election during future elections.
As voting progressed across the constituency, election officials continued accreditation and balloting activities without major incidents, while political party agents and observers monitored proceedings in accordance with electoral regulations.
The by-election was held to fill the vacant House of Representatives seat for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, with residents expressing hope that the eventual winner would prioritise development, effective representation and the welfare of the people.
Political analysts observed that the large turnout recorded during the election underscored the importance attached to the poll by constituents and highlighted the growing participation of citizens in Nigeria’s democratic process.
At the close of voting, electoral officials commenced the sorting and counting of ballots in the presence of party agents, observers and members of the public, as residents awaited the official declaration of results by INEC.
