The Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) has organised a capacity-building workshop on road safety management for State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) officials from Kaduna, Katsina and Kano States to enhance safety in rural road development projects.

The workshop, which brought together key stakeholders from the three states, focused on strengthening participants’ knowledge of road safety principles and best practices in the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of rural roads.
Speaking at the opening session, the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Prof. Abdulhamid Ahmad, underscored the importance of integrating road safety considerations into every stage of road infrastructure development.

Ahmad described the training as timely, urging participants to pay close attention to the sessions in order to maximise the benefits of the programme.
According to him, improved road safety measures are critical to reducing accidents and ensuring safer mobility for rural communities.
Participants at the workshop included State Project Coordinators, Infrastructure Engineers, Environmental and Social Safeguards Officers, Development Communication Officers, and Gender-Based Violence Officers involved in RAAMP implementation.

The training covered key areas such as road safety audits, identification and mitigation of hazardous road conditions, traffic management measures, pedestrian and cyclist safety, community awareness strategies, emergency response mechanisms and the promotion of a safety culture.
Through interactive discussions and practical case studies, participants gained insights into effective approaches for addressing road safety challenges and improving safety outcomes on rural roads.

Some participants commended RAAMP for organising the workshop, describing it as relevant to the ongoing implementation of rural road projects in their respective states.
They pledged to apply the knowledge acquired during the training to support the development of safer transport corridors for farmers, traders, students and other road users in rural communities.
As part of the programme, participants undertook a practical road safety sensitisation exercise at the Danja–Bazanga–Nahuce demonstration road in Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State, where students and community members were educated on road safety practices.
The workshop forms part of RAAMP’s efforts to promote safe, resilient and sustainable rural transport infrastructure across participating states.
