A possible wave of defections may be brewing in the Niger State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following reports that some former political appointees and other party stakeholders are considering leaving the ruling party over alleged grievances arising from its internal processes.
Sources familiar with the development Time Express in Minna on Friday that consultations among the aggrieved stakeholders had intensified in recent weeks. They alleged that dissatisfaction over the outcome of the party’s internal processes and perceived marginalisation of long-serving members had prompted discussions on their political future.
According to the sources, those reportedly involved include some former commissioners who served under Gov. Mohammed Umaru Bago, former special advisers who served during the administration of former Governor and current Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, some serving members of the Niger State House of Assembly who were unsuccessful in the APC’s recent primaries, as well as a number of grassroots mobilisers across the state.
One of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity and is from the Suleja Emirate, claimed that the group’s next line of action would be announced after the APC releases its authentic list of candidates. The source alleged that the planned move would have significant political implications and demonstrate that political influence extends beyond any single individual.
The source further claimed that consultations were ongoing with influential political stakeholders and grassroots structures across the state’s 25 local government areas, expressing confidence that the proposed movement would attract widespread support if eventually formalised.
Political analysts said that, if the reported defections eventually materialise, they could alter the political landscape in Niger State ahead of the 2027 general elections, considering the influence some of the affected individuals wield in their constituencies.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the alleged defections had not been independently verified by Time Express. Efforts to obtain official comments from the Niger State APC leadership were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to party officials were not responded to.
Analysts also noted that any large-scale defections, if confirmed, could have implications for the APC’s internal cohesion and electoral strategy in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
