NPC Rolls Out Digital Civil Registration System in Kano

The National Population Commission (NPC) has rolled out the Digital Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) System in Kano State to strengthen birth and death registration and improve access to legal identity.

The Federal Commissioner of the commission in Kano, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa  disclosed this at a press briefing on the rollout in Kano.

He said the digital system would replace the conventional paper-based registration process with a secure, efficient and real-time electronic platform.

The Federal Commissioner explained that the initiative would improve data quality, reduce delays and errors, and enhance the efficiency of civil registration services.

He said birth registration was not only a legal requirement but a fundamental human right that established a child’s legal identity, nationality, age and family relationships, adding that it also facilitated access to healthcare, education, social protection and other government services.

According to him, reliable civil registration data is essential for evidence-based planning, policy formulation and national development.

The commissioner said the NPC was collaborating with healthcare facilities, traditional and religious institutions, local government councils, development partners and community leaders to ensure that birth and death registration services were accessible across Kano State.

He acknowledged the support of UNICEF, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Ministry of Health, National Orientation Agency (NOA), KASSEP, Girl Effect and other stakeholders in strengthening the civil registration system.

Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa stressed that birth registration remained free for children below five years at designated NPC registration centres, warning the public against illegal centres issuing fake certificates.

He urged parents, guardians, traditional and religious leaders, healthcare workers and the media to intensify awareness on timely birth and death registration, adding that parents and guardians should verify certificates by scanning the barcode printed on them.
