Dr Aminu Magashi Garba, Technical Adviser to the Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has donated relief materials to inmates of the Bichi Female Rehabilitation Centre following damage caused by a rainstorm.

Magashi, accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi, visited the centre on Sunday, July 26, where he interacted with staff and inmates.

He donated blankets, drugs and food items to support the inmates affected by the incident.

Magashi observed that the heavy rainfall had blown off the roofs of several rooms occupied by female inmates, while sections of the perimeter fence were also destroyed.

He described the damage as a serious safety and security concern, commending SEMA for temporarily relocating the inmates to designated and secured rooms at the Bichi Male Rehabilitation Centre.

He said the relocation was necessary to safeguard the lives, security and welfare of the inmates while repair and rehabilitation work was being carried out at the female centre.

Magashi said he would support SEMA and the ministry in convening a strategic stakeholders’ meeting to review the development and strengthen emergency response mechanisms.

He said the meeting would also seek to mobilise additional resources from the government, non-governmental organisations and development partners to support SEMA in managing the 13 rehabilitation centres under its supervision.

The technical adviser said he had recently visited six of the 13 rehabilitation centres, where he donated drugs and food items to inmates and supported a one-day training programme for health workers serving across the centres.

Magashi also expressed appreciation to Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf for appointing him as Technical Adviser to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
