The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano Online Media Chapel, in collaboration with the Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation, has organised a one-day capacity-building workshop to equip journalists with skills in election reporting and safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The workshop, held at the NUJ Secretariat, Farm Centre, Kano, brought together online journalists from different media organisations for training on journalism ethics, fact-checking, election reporting and personal safety while covering elections and conflict situations.
Speaking at the event, a former Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, stressed the need for journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness and impartiality in election reporting.
He urged media practitioners to avoid the spread of misinformation and remain committed to the highest standards of professionalism. Also speaking, the Editor-in-Chief of Stallion Times newspaper, Isyaku Ahmad, emphasised adherence to professional ethics and shared practical strategies for addressing challenges associated with election coverage.
The Chairman of the NUJ Kano Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, said the training was designed to equip members with the knowledge and skills required to safely and professionally cover election campaigns and other electoral activities.
He urged journalists to prioritise their personal safety while discharging their responsibilities.
Representing the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation, Sulaiman Jalo reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote professional journalism and societal development.
He said the foundation would continue to collaborate with journalists and other stakeholders to combat fake news and misinformation in order to foster peaceful and credible electoral processes in the country.
